About Hard Top QuiltsHard Top Quilts are quilt patterned lazy susans, trivets and custom accessories. They are hand-made from solid surface counter-top materials such as Corian and Avonite. They come in a wide array of colors, and may be ordered in colors to compliment your decor. These premium materials offer a unique opportunity for artistic creations combining traditional quilt design and woodworking skills. Many of the materials used are recycled from the counter-top manufacturing process. While solid surface looks like stone, it can be machined with woodworking tools and techniques. Lazy susans and trivets are useful, decorative items for your home. They are heat resistant and washable. Minor scuffs can be rubbed out with fine steel wool, and buffing with paste wax keeps the shine. Trivets are dishwasher safe. Combining solid surface with handmade solid wood furniture is another opportunity for artistic design. How are the lazy susans made? They are assembled in order much like a fabric quilt, sanded and polished. The lazy susans you see pictured here are just a sample of what can be done. Custom orders are welcome. |
Why does solid surface materials make a good trivet? How heat resistant is it? Plenty enough for setting serving dishes on the table. The finish on your table is much more sensitive to heat, and is easily damaged. Solid surface materials can be thermoformed, but it has to be heated in an oven until it softens all the way through. That takes quite a long time. No serving dish is going to be warm enough, or stay hot long enough to make the trivet soft. Depending on what your counter tops are made from, setting straight from the oven pans on it may cause damage. If you have any doubts about your counter top and how much heat it can take, use a trivet. The scroll sawn trivets are cut from a single piece of solid surface material. The designs are unique to Hard Top Quilts, and the colors available are many. The 6"x 6" quilt block trivets are assembled from many different colors. The lazy susans and trivets are made from the remnants of the counter top manufacturing process. We use what they can't to make beautiful and useful items. I've seen trivets made from many things. Wood, wicker, ceramic and fabric are just a few examples. Any item used around food is going to get spilled on. Easy care is important. Trivets are dishwasher safe, and come out good as new. How fragile are the trivets? They are tougher than anything made of glass or ceramic. We have dropped them on concrete with no damage other than minor chips on a corner. With normal use in a home with wood, carpet or vinyl flooring, expect a long, useful life. |
